About

“We poke holes. That’s what we do.”

– Chris Lal-Parks

Business analyst- this term gets thrown out there but what exactly is it and how do we at GovernIT differ from the crowd? Let me shed some light on this.

A business analyst is someone who elicits information from various stakeholders’ models requirements, tests quality, test practices, defines business problems, and validates solutions. In the simplest terms we poke holes then rebuild the hole ridden object into something that is more fit-for-purpose.

We do the uncomfortable things that a business or client did not think of because they were so passionate about their idea to change the world.

We use our various skills, tools, and techniques to ask focused questions and look for opportunities to improve. Sometimes that requires us to be conduit between the technical and the practical. Sometimes we are the voice of reason where reason was not expected. Sometimes we are the cat herders. But we are the pokers and prodders.

So, when asked what I do in the next BBQ I will respond with “In GovernIT, I am the Chief Growth Poker (which translates to Chief Marketing Officer in corporate speak). For my clients, I am a poker/prodder.” This is much more interesting than Business Analyst. It also starts a conversation that I am willing to go head on into because it’s humorous, fun and quite frankly truthful.
